Michael McChlery

Born in July 1950 and raised in the Bayland Area of St.Michael, Michael McChlery's lifelong connection to the sea runs deep-rooted in childhood days spent along the shores of Carlisle Bay. His seascapes are not mere representations; they are heartfelt memories rendered in pigment, shaped by years of sailing, surfing, and coastal life.

As a teenager, Mike began exhibiting in the Annual Industrial and Agricultural Exhibition at Queen's Park and selling his art to both locals and visitors. He later pursued studies in graphic arts in Canada, before returning to Barbados to build a creative business with his family. Though commercial work took precedence for many years, his recent retirement has rekindled his painter's spirit.

His work now reflects a quiet dialogue between memory and imagination, often inspired by the rhythms of the countryside and the wild beauty of the island's east coast. In his words:

"Most of my work is based on imagination borrowed heavily from memory and in most cases connected to my countryside surroundings and the east coast of the island."
